I think setting was the literary element that is presented in the text. The setting was don't trust anyone, even your own family. Riley has spent her entire life believing that Lisa committed suicide. She believed this lie all her life because her family kept it from her. Riley now has to decide what the past means for her future. Riley then feels that there is still secrets being kept. The setting made her shape her view of her family and their dynamics. Riley feels hurt and betrayed because of the setting especially that it was her parents that lied.
In the book The Silent Sister, there was a very interesting scene. The scene was when Riley found out her sister wasn't dead. She faked her own death because she MURDERED her personal music teacher! It makes Riley realize that she was lied to this whole time. She thought her sister was dead because she committed suicide. On page 101 it says, " That sister of yours who killed herself, she didn't" that's when she was first told by her dad's friend. She thought he was just joking. She then starts believing when things begin to add up. For an example, her mom would always panic when speaking about Lisa. She even wouldn't let the name of Lisa be called in the house. I think that later in the book Riley will come face to face with her sister, Lisa.
